What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, is a transformative and compassionate approach to healing that views the mind as made up of distinct subpersonalities, or “parts.” Each part has a unique role, voice, and perspective, and IFS assumes that all parts no matter how extreme or disruptive they may seem they have positive intentions for us. These parts may include protectors like self-criticism or anger, which step in to shield us from pain, as well as vulnerable parts that carry the weight of past wounds, such as fear, shame, or sadness.

IFS therapy helps clients identify and understand their internal parts, which can be categorized into:

  • Managers: Parts that try to control and protect the individual by managing daily life and emotions.

  • Firefighters: Parts that act impulsively to distract from emotional pain or distress.

  • Exiles: Parts that carry wounds from past experiences, often holding pain, shame, or fear.

The goal of IFS is to help individuals develop a relationship with their internal parts, understand their intentions, and alleviate the burdens they have carried for years. At the core of this process is the concept of accessing the qualities of Self, often described as the 8 C's: confidence, calm, compassion, courage, creativity, clarity, curiosity, and connectedness. By utilizing Self-energy, we can bring harmony to our internal system and guide our parts in a manner that promotes healing and balance.

IFS is a beautiful and empowering journey for anyone seeking to heal from trauma, manage anxiety or depression, or simply understand themselves more deeply. It’s a path that helps you move beyond judgment and into connection, unlocking your potential to live a life led by your true Self.

Who Can Benefit from IFS Therapy?

IFS therapy is suitable for a wide range of individuals, including those dealing with:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Anxiety and Depression

  • Relationship Issues

  • Self-Esteem and Identity Struggles

  • Eating Disorders and Addictions

Personally, IFS has been life-changing for me. It allowed me to see the parts of myself I once felt ashamed of as protectors that were trying to help me in their own way. Through this work, I’ve not only found healing but also a deeper understanding of who I am at my core.
